Our multidisciplinary approach ensures that we can tackle complex challenges and provide comprehensive, cutting-edge services to meet the evolving demands of the marine industry.
THE STORY OF SANDMAP
In 2017, two passionate professionals from the Gold Coast – Rod Tansley and Sean McCagh – joined forces to create something groundbreaking: SandMap. Both seasoned in the fields of spatial science and engineering, their shared love for surfing and boating set the stage for a unique venture. The inspiration came from their firsthand experiences with the unpredictable movement of sand beneath the water’s surface, which posed challenges for both surfers and boaters alike.
Teaming up with Iter Systems in France, they developed the world’s first PWC-based hydrographic surveying system, using advanced swath bathymetry technology. Commencing commercial operations in 2019, their vessel, SandMap 1, was tested under challenging conditions, successfully surveying the Palm Beach Artificial Reef on the Gold Coast to Maritime Safety Queensland Class A standards, proving the system’s capabilities.
Since then, the team has grown, along with an expanding fleet of vessels and advanced sonar systems. SandMap continues to excel in hydrographic survey projects, transforming how marine environments and sand movement are understood.
