Beginnings
SandMap was founded in 2017 by Gold Coast spatial and engineering professionals Rod Tansley and Sean McCagh, inspired by their experiences of the impact of sand movement on surfing and boating.
After a review of available technologies including testing at Lake Annecy in France, the pair partnered with Iter Systems to design and build the world’s first PWC (personal water craft or jetski) based commercial hydrographic surveying system to utilise swath bathymetry.
In a ‘baptism of fire’ the vessel (creatively named SandMap 1) showed it’s value in late 2019 in very challenging conditions, successfully surveying Palm Beach Artificial Reef to the exacting requirements of Maritime Safety Queensland Class A standard.
Since 2019, we have been lucky enough to have been joined on our journey by the highly experienced Ted Anderberg, and the youthfully enthusiastic and rapidly developing Gene Rippin and Luiz Schmidt, and likewise our small fleet of vessels sonar and navigation systems has grown.
